According to the Hindu calendar, the term Amavasya depicts the New Moon Day. On this particular day the moon is not visible in the sky. It happenes only once in a month. When the term "Amavasya" is divided into two parts, the first term signifies 'Ama', which means "together," and *'Vasya'*, means "to dwell" or "reside." It is said that the moon becomes invisible from Earth on Amavasya because the sun and the moon comes in the same alignment.
The position of the moon lies between the Earth and the sun. The earth faces moon's dark side hence the sun does not reflect any light.
The connection of Amavasya is directly with the spiritual activities, reflection, and ancestoral rites in Hindu culture. This day is considered the best time for performing *Shraddha Karm* and *Tarpana Kriya*, which help give respect and thanks to the ancestors or departed souls.
It is also believed that things and prayers offered on Amavasya have a better chance of reaching to the spirits of ancestors because they are more approachable on Amavasya. Hence, the people burn diyaas, pray for the peace of departed souls who once belonged to their family, and perform rituals close to rivers or other bodies of water.
Amavasya is the most appropriate day for introspection from a spiritual aspect. It shows a period of silence and possible change because there is no visible moonlight on earth. To fiter out the minds and emotions, many people keep a fast and practice spiritual practices such as Sadhna. Devotees collect at temples to seek purification and heavenly benefits as the positive influence of temple gets increases.
Astrology sometimes depicts Amavasya as unlucky or not suitable day for starting new projects or making important life decisions due to the low lunar (moon) energy.
In Hinduism, Amavasya is therefore not only an astronomical event but also a highly symbolic day for self-introspection, spiritual development and remembering the departed souls to offer them respect.

- Mauni Amavasya – As the name signifies the devotees keep silence (Maun) for the whole day and take a holy dip in sacred river Ganga.
- Somvati Amavasya – If Amavasya falls on Monday, it is called Somwati Amavasya. In several regions of India, people avoid using and consuming things made up of mustard oil and turmeric.
- Diwali Amavasya – It is considered one of the big and important Amavasya days. Several people perform Sadhna on Diwali Amavasya.
- Shani Amavasya – If Amavasya falls on Saturday, it is called Shani Amavasya.
What is the Importance of Amavasya in Hindu scriptures?
- Pitra Kaarya (Dignified rituals for Ancestors) - On Amavasya, the family members remember their ancestors and perform a respectful Shradh Karm, Pind Daan and Tarpan. It is considered that doing this brings peace to departed souls and helps in seeking the blessings for the family members.
- Ideal day for Meditation - The night of Amavasya is believed very peaceful and serene. Therefore, on this night, a lot of saints and yogis perform meditation and offer prayers. It strengthens their relationship with God.
- Eliminating Negativity - Since the earth does not get moonlight on Amavasya, some people believe that negative energies becomes very strong. Hence, they light diyas (lamps) and perform puja to eliminate all the bad energies from the home.
- Begining of the New Things - Some people think it's bad to start a new job/project/relationship on Amavasya. But it can be a specific potent day for spiritual development, according to others, if the proper prayers are spoken.
What is the right and simple way of offering puja on Amavasya?
People can divide the rituals in two part, one is, morning puja and other is evening puja.
For morning puja rituals -:
- Start your day with a holy bath in a river or at home. If you are unable to visit Ganga, use sacred Ganga Jal while bathing.
- Wear washed and clean clothes.
- Choose a quiet place in your home or at a temple.
- Ignite a diya (lamp) and incense stick.
- Offer flowers, water, and rice to God.
- Chant mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya”.
- Offer food (bhog) and water to your ancestors.
- Perform Tarpan (water with sesame seeds) in the name of ancestors.
- Donate food or clothes to the poor or to a temple.
For evening puja rituals -:
- Light more diyas in the home.
- Say a small prayer to keep your home safe from bad energy.
- Listen to or read stories of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, or Goddess Kali.
- Things to Do on Amavasya
- Take a holy bath
- Do meditation or yoga
- Offer food or sweets to animals, like cows, dogs, or crows
- Help the poor and needy
- Visit a temple
- Say thank you to your ancestors.
What one should not do or avoid on Amavasya?
- You should avoid starting anything new on this day such as business or job.
- Cutting nails or hair on Amavasya is prohibited.
- Avoid consuming non-vegetarian food.
- Avoid indulging in anykind of arguement or fight.
- Do not sleep late or wake up late.
Special Amavasy Tithi of 2025-:
Mauni Amavasya – 29 January 2025
People take a dip in the Sangam (holy location) or in river Ganga and stay silent (maun) the entire day. It is good for the peace of mind.
Shani Amavasya – 26 May 2025
Shani Amavasya falls on a Saturday, therefore it is called Shani Amavasya. People worship to Lord Shani to remove obstacles.
Diwali Amavasya – 20 October 2025
This is the most famous Amavasya tithi. People celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh is worshipped for wealth and happiness on this day.
