How to prepare for death?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

However uncomfortable we all have to die one day! While this is not something about which we think every day, preparing for death can make living a lot easier for you and your family.

It gives you a chance to have control over your end-of-life decisions and to plan for your ideal death. An ideal death can vary for everyone depending on one’s wishes. It can mean safe distribution of assets to his/her children for one person, and it can mean expressing one’s feelings to their loved ones for another.

Preparing for your death will make sure that others know what you want to happen after you’re gone and how to deal with the different situations.

Here are the steps to follow to prepare for death:

1.     Write your Last Will or Testament

A will, also known as a testament, is a legally bound document that expresses a person’s wishes regarding the distribution of their property and the care of any minor children. It allows you to name people as beneficiaries for particular assets, saves time and money for your loved ones, and allows you to make any specific donations that you would want to do from your wealth.

2.     Planning your funeral

Planning your funeral may seem unnecessary, but it saves your family from a lot of needless worries and ensures that you get what you want.

For the funeral service, the first decision is to choose between a cremation or a burial service. You may also opt for organ donation, and for that, you need to notify the organization beforehand. If opting for burial, you can look for burial spots and buy the liked casket. And if you choose cremation, you need to inform the family what they should do with the remains. Many funeral service providers help you in making your will and planning your funeral.

3.     Designate a power of attorney

A designated power of attorney is for when and if you fall ill and cannot handle you’re financial and legal matters. A POA is usually appointed when the individual cannot be present to sign the documents. It is an important decision and must be taken sensibly.

In India, there are different types of power of attorney that you can choose from depending on your situation and the power you want to give to the respective attorney.

4.     Designate a manager for your digital assets

With the increase in involvement in digital life, apart from your physical assets, you need to have a plan for your digital assets as well. For example, you may want Facebook to memorialize your page or you may want the account deleted permanently. In case your family wants access to your google accounts, they will have to go through a lot of needless procedures to retrieve the password if you don’t provide them with the same. Hence it is better to put together a list of usernames and passwords and instructions on how you want your accounts to be managed.

5.     Write an Emotional will

An emotion will is a non-legal document where you can express your smallest of wishes. It can contain personalized letters for your loved ones, small things that you want to be passed on or simply just memories of your life with others. It is an emotional goodbye for all your friends and families.
