“Yoga is a light, which once lit will never dim. The better your practice, the brighter your flame.” ― B.K.S Iyengar

The general assumption about yoga is that it is all about bending and twisting one’s body in different shapes. What we don’t know is that yoga is much more than that. It is taking care of one’s physical, spiritual, and mental well-being.

Yoga is a 5000-year-old body of knowledge comprising various yoga poses (asana), breathing techniques, and meditation. Recently, yoga has become popular as a form of physical exercise, enhancing the overall well-being of individuals.

While we know the generic benefits of yoga, it is important to understand that how in the long run, it can benefit us to living a long and healthy life.

1. Yoga makes bones stronger

There are many postures in yoga that require the bearing of weights. They help strengthen bones, particularly arm bones that are most vulnerable to osteoporotic fractures.

When one grows old, the bones tend to deteriorate. If one does yoga every day, it can increase overall bone density.

2. Improves Balance

Yoga includes different types of postures and asanas that provide safe balancing exercises we all need. Yoga increases one’s ability to feel in control of the body. This eventually means fewer falls, which gives more independence during old age.

3. Helps Lose Weight

Though yoga is not an extreme form of physical exercise, it does help in losing weight. The poses help stimulate the organs of the body which improves metabolism. You even gain more control over your body, food choices, and anxiety (which may cause overheating).

4. Improves mental health

Yoga increases body awareness, relieves stress, and calms the nervous system. It has been shown to enhance social wellbeing and reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and hyperactivity.

Yoga with some soothing music and a quiet atmosphere puts one mind at peace.

5. Detoxification the body

Yoga aids in flushing out the toxins from the body as many of the physical postures stimulate blood flow to different body organs. There are a series of yoga asanas to detox the body and eliminate unwanted impurities of carbon dioxide, lactic acid, and lymphatic fluid.

6. Yoga for heart diseases

Yoga affects the respiratory system which in turn helps the heart. It lowers blood pressure, improves heart rate, lowers bad cholesterol levels, and boosts blood circulation. The fact that yoga helps in dealing with stress and pressure, itself can help a heart patient.
